Visual presentations on The Giver?
Ok so I have to make a visual presentation about “The Giver” By Lois Lowry, persuading my english teacher to agree with me on a key point touched upon in the book. Now when I say “visual presentation” I mean a poster, a mobile, a diagram, something along thoughs lines. Not a power point. Ok, my topics for discussion are, Global Warming, Euthanasia, or Comunal Living. How would I put these into a creative presentation, but also a persuading one?
The Giver is essentially stressing that without one thing, you cannot have another–without pain, you cannot know the beauty of pleasure, and without ugliness, you cannot appreciate beauty. This is the theme of the book; could you alter your variety of topics to accomadate that? Perhaps your visual could be a huge coin that you cut from poster board. On one side, have “darkness” such as poverty, hatred, and war. On the other side, have “light” such as charity, love, and peace. Talk about how a coin has to have two sides, not just one.
If you must limit yourself to the given topics, a good idea for Euthanasia could be a rope with a bucket of water or sand at the end. It is getting too heavy for the rope, so you just cut it off before it rips the rope of its own accord. This represents how people are killed during euthanasia–they are going to die anyways, so you quicken their death and you save the rope in the rope in the process. You can say that the rope represents Jonas’s society–it kills others in order to preserve the purity and comfort of itself.
