We are traveling to the US (from Australia) and what should we do about mobile (cell) phones?
Can you get cheap prepaid phones? I know there’s global roaming but it’s really expensive and we’re in a group who just want to be able to contact each other while we’re in the US.
And how much are we looking at if we got a cheap phone when we get there? Thanks
You can get a prepaid Tracfone for $20 or $30 at big box stores like Walmart or Target. I have one, they work fine, and they have regular US phone numbers. Try and get one that includes the double minute feature which drops the per minute price from about 30c to about 15c. LIke all mobiles in the US, you pay for both outgoing and incoming calls, and outgoing and incoming SMS. Each SMS costs 0.3 “minutes”, which is about 10c or 5c with double minutes.
Little known bonus: they include a long distance service where you can call many international locations, including landlines in Australia, for no charge beyond the regular airtime. For calls from Australia, you just call since there’s no distinction between calls to mobiles and calls to landlines in North America.
