This Week In Tech: Mobile World Congress
I realize we have spent recent weeks highlighting especially mobile applications mobile platforms and development. However, with the Mobile World Congress this week, our team of mobile development can not fail to make a specialized function in your new operating systems that were released this week.
Wholesale Applications Community
Never heard of them? This is a new alliance of 24 major phone operators, who joined this week to create a unified App Store to compete with Apple ® App Store ™. According to the BBC, its aim is to make it easier to build and sell applications "regardless of device technology," that is available in multiple types of phones.
As a developer we have certainly recognized the frustration of developing applications across platforms. Between custom development for the iPhone ™, Droid ™, Nokia ®, Symbian, Blackberry ® and Microsoft ® platforms, each platform requires a new approach the new code, and totally unique presentation systems.
The Wholesale Applications Community hopes to develop a common standard for applications early next year. It is likely that a family system based on open source like Linux. However, LG ®, Samsung ®, Sony ® and Adobe ® also have been involved, so that potentially could develop something completely new. In any case, a unified platform would be a great help custom application developers everywhere.
BADA
Also in the news for mobile operating systems Samsung Electronics has launched its first phone to go along with the launch of its new mobile operating system: Bada ™. The new phone, the Wave ™ S8500, is the latest smartphone from Samsung.
As the second largest phone manufacturer, Samsung has only a very small market smartphone, which is teetering around 3 percent of the market share of smartphones. Samsung expects the new phone and the new operating system Bada help push back on the market.
Bada uses APIs including OpenGL 1.1 and OpenGL 2.0, which makes the development similar to many other platforms, and also means that porting existing applications Bada more than can be done with a negligible effort.
Marketed as a direct competitor to Android Google, Samsung will be interesting to see how well they can leverage their position to make a success Bada, but will be an uphill battle. Or, always have the highest Community application, right?
Windows 7 Series Phone
We wrote a blog earlier this week exclusively on Windows 7 Series Phone. However, since then it has leaked that the software developer kit will be based on Silverlight and XNA ™, Xbox ® product development.
What we are excited about all this is that we are successful in the development of Silverlight and could begin to develop applications for Windows 7 series phone now, before more than 90 days, the development kit is still at large.
Symbian ^ 3
As a full version code open later this year, Symbian ^ 3 provides some important advances in the mobile operating system market. Besides being able to support 2D and 3D through improved acceleration, but also provides support for HDMI which allows users to watch high definition movies from the phone as 1080p.
S ^ 3 also emphasizes usability and simplicity, allowing one-touch connectivity, an improved widget manager, compatibility and support 4G multi touch. There is already a large number of applications that have been developed for S ^ 3, including a Skype ™ application, although the first S ^ 3 phones will not until Q3 of this year.
Symbian is a nonprofit organization dedicated to creating "the most innovative user experience on mobile devices "And included representatives of many major mobile players like Samsung, Sony, Texas Instruments, and Nokia.
Since it is completely open source, would be interesting to see if this is the model adopted wholesale application of the Community, especially since many companies are represented in both organizations.
Opera Mini
Although technically a web browser, not an operating system, this seemed a good place to talk there are rumors that Opera Mini may be available for the iPhone. Opera Mini offers a very fast web browsing using your own web server to compress pages before sending them to your phone, which reduces bandwidth costs by up to 90%.
Unfortunately it was only available on Symbian and Windows Mobile platforms, however, announced this week that the iPhone and Android may be getting Opera at some point this year.
Adobe Air
Also, not an operating system, per se, Adobe ® AIR ® acts as a platform development tool that developers can use to create applications Flash, Android and BlackBerry. Air aims to solve the problem of cross-platform development using a development kit that you can then export the software to the versions are compatible with each individual platform.
The air is now used to create desktop applications, but will be updated to provide the features date. This release will happen in relation to the ® Flash 10.1 update that is expected to happen sometime around April of this year.
